Insights Manager, AgriTech Programme
Mobile for Development
About the Team
The GSMA AgriTech programme works towards equitable and sustainable food chains that empower farmers and strengthen local economies.
We support the mobile industry, agricultural sector stakeholders, innovators and investors in AgriTech space to launch, improve and scale impactful and commercially viable digital solutions for smallholder farmers in the developing world. We seek, identify, promote, test and scale models that deliver social impact while rewarding private sector participation.
Over the past three years the programme has been exploring the potential of mobile technology to support farmers and the broader agricultural sector in increasing their
ability to adapt to climate change
. We are especially interested in technologies that use key mobile operator assets such as connectivity, network intelligence, IoT and Big Data to enable new services such as flood warnings, hyper-localised weather forecasts and agro-climatic advisory. In addition, we are interested in the role of mobile money in enabling financial inclusion services – e.g. weather and crop insurance and other financial solutions that help farmers prepare to draught, floods and loss of crops.
What the Hiring Manager Says
“Our new Insights Manager will be at the forefront of informing and engaging the industry in order to accomplish the AgriTech programme’s mission of strengthening the climate resilience of rural populations. The ideal candidate will have strong business acumen and a record of accomplishment as a specialist, consultant or analyst in climate, environment and/or agriculture related disciplines, and ideally an understanding or experience in working in the field of technology applied to solving climate change adaptation issues.”
Daniele Tricarico, Insights Director, GSMA AgriTech programme
About the Role
You will produce cutting edge research and insights on opportunities and best practices for climate adaptation technologies, covering topics such as climate smart agriculture, weather monitoring and forecasting, climate finance and others.
You are a quick learner, and are able to grasp the complexities of technologies and business models. You can work in an emerging opportunity area without a defined blueprint.
To succeed in this role, you will need to apply your own strong analytical skills. You are an excellent writer, with a record of delivering high-quality, engaging research outputs for a variety of audiences.
Your excellent communication skills will allow you to build a solid understanding of the AgriTech ecosystem, identifying key stakeholders and trends in climate adaptation technologies, and recognising nascent opportunities for digital solutions and private-private and private-public partnerships.
You will work closely with a range of external stakeholders (e.g. mobile operators, technology vendors and institutional actors), as well as with internal stakeholders within the AgriTech programme (e.g. the Head of the AgriTech Programme and the Insights Director), Mobile for Development department and the broader GSMA.
You will expand and maintain existing programme’s relationship network, and will be able to educate team members on emerging opportunities and best practices and in climate adaptation technologies, and their implications for the mobile industry.
You will be able to present strategic view, commercial rational, global best practice and viable business models for stakeholders. You will do so through a variety of formats and channels, including face-to-face presentations, adapting to your audience needs.
As results are achieved, you will drive knowledge sharing by presenting and promoting your research and lessons from insights projects via multiple channels, such as blogs and webinar, building upon the existing knowledge of the team.
You have experience of working at an international institution, NGOs or tech company in the field of climate change adaptation or agriculture. You may have worked in developing countries and have an understanding and/or experience on the role of digital technologies for climate adaptation in agricultural sector.
You possess a solid understanding of the mobile industry, recognising key industry trends, commercial drivers and challenges faced by mobile operators in developing countries.
You are a team player and are able to achieve results through your excellent relationship management skills and your ability to consider the interests of multiple stakeholders in your day-to-day work. You complement these skills with a proved ability to negotiate and influence all types of stakeholders, including C-level management, through an evidence-based approach.
You have outstanding communication skills in English language. You have excellent presentation and writing skills, with an ability to structure reports coherently with some guidance from your managers. Additional language skills, especially French, are advantageous.
To achieve results, you are able to adapt to different styles and to work collaboratively towards agreed outcomes for projects. You are used to working in multicultural and geographically spread-out teams. A self-starter and highly motivated individual, you manage projects and drive them through to completion.
You are willing to travel on international basis.
