About the Team
The mission of the mAgri programme is to advance the productivity and profitability of smallholder farmers and the agricultural industry at large through scalable and commercial mobile services. Globally, the livelihood of 1.3 billion people depends on agriculture. Smallholder farmers produce and sell nearly 70 per cent of the food consumed worldwide but remain financially excluded and increasingly vulnerable to changing climate patterns affecting their yields. Mobile is uniquely positioned to bridge the information and financial gap in rural areas at scale.
The GSMA mAgri Programme forges partnerships between mobile operators, technology providers and agricultural organisations and supports scalable commercial mobile services aimed at the agricultural sector at large. The mAgri team is currently supporting mobile operators in digitising agricultural value chains in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. It is also supporting the development of IoT and big data technologies that help farmers and the broader agricultural sector increase their resilience to climate change.
What the Hiring Manager Says
Our new Insights Manager will be at the forefront of informing and engaging the industry and stakeholders in order to support the mAgri programme’s mission of advancing the productivity and profitability of smallholder farmers and the agricultural sector at large. The ideal candidate will have a solid record of accomplishment as industry analyst or consultant, strong business acumen, as well as excellent stakeholder management, influencing and communication skills.
Daniele Tricarico, Insights Director, mAgri & mHealth
About the Role
You will take ownership and responsibility for the publications and knowledge sharing work stream of the mAgri programme. You will produce cutting edge research and insights on opportunities and best practices to digitise agricultural value chains in developing countries.
To succeed in this role, you will need to apply your own strong qualitative and quantitative analytical skills and when needed to manage external consultants. A record of delivering high-quality, readable research outputs for a variety of audiences will be a strong advantage.
Your excellent communication skills will allow you to build a solid understanding of the ecosystem, identifying key stakeholders and trends in the mobile agriculture space, and recognising nascent opportunities.
You will work closely with a range of external stakeholders (e.g. mobile operators, technology vendors and institutional actors), as well as with internal stakeholders within the mAgri programme (e.g. the Head of the mAgri Programme and the Insights Director) and the broader GSMA. You will expand and maintain existing programme’s relationship network, building a community of practitioners with a shared vision and interest.
Besides producing publication, you will consult existing partners of the programme and other stakeholders. You will be able to present strategic view, commercial rational, global best practice and viable business models for stakeholders. You will do so through a variety of formats and channels, including face-to-face presentations, adapting to your audience needs.
As results are achieved, you will drive knowledge sharing by presenting and promoting your research and lessons from insights projects via multiple channels, such as blogs and webinar, building upon the existing knowledge of the team.
You have experience working as an industry analyst or consultant for a mobile operator in a developing country or in the mobile for development space, at a tech company or NGO. You possess a solid understanding of the mobile industry, recognising key industry trends, commercial drivers and challenges faced by mobile operators in developing countries. You are a quick learner, and are able to grasp the complexities of technologies and business models. You can work in an emerging opportunity area without a defined blueprint.
You are a team player and are able to achieve results through your excellent relationship management skills and your ability to consider the interests of multiple stakeholders in your day-to-day work. You complement these skills with a proved ability to negotiate and influence all types of stakeholders, including C-level management, through an evidence-based approach.
You have outstanding communication skills in English language. To achieve results, you communicate timely and effectively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, adapting to different styles and working collaboratively towards agreed outcomes for projects. You have excellent presentation skills and writing skills, with an ability to structure reports coherently with some guidance from your managers. Additional language skills, especially French, are advantageous.
You are used to working in multicultural and geographically spread-out teams. A self-starter and highly motivated individual, you manage projects and drive them through to completion.
You are an undergraduate degree, ideally in business studies or international development studies, and have a postgrad degree at a leading university. You are willing to travel on international basis.
